Sueey Gutierrez

Sueey Gutierrez is a Brooklyn-born artist whose vibrant work explores the intricacies of identity, culture, and memory through powerful figurative mixed-media drawings and acrylic paintings. Rooted in her Salvadoran, Maya, and American heritage, Gutierrez's art merges Indigenous-Latine influences with Mayan and Roman Catholic iconography, offering a reimagined perspective on traditional figure and landscape painting. Her bold compositions, rich in color and detail, celebrate empowered Indigenous women, Salvadoran heritage, and the healing presence of nature.

Gutierrez’s artistic journey began at age three, culminating in a scholarship at the Brooklyn Museum by age six. She holds a BA from the Fashion Institute of Technology and has earned recognition as the 2024 winner of the Friends of the National Museum of the American Latino Design Contest. Her work has been featured in publications including Newsday, The Timber Journal, and Salvi Yorkers, highlighting her dynamic contributions to contemporary art.

Her exhibitions span the United States and beyond, with notable recent group shows at The Salmagundi Club in New York City, the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts in San Francisco, the Southampton History Museum, MoCA L.I., and the Long Island Museum. Gutierrez’s major solo exhibitions, Entre Mis Mundos at Ma’s House BIPOC Studios on the Shinnecock Reservation and Divina at Muñeca Arthouse in Blue Point, New York, further emphasize her unique ability to weave narrative and identity into her art.

Through her work, Gutierrez invites viewers to reflect on cultural identity, the Indigenous-Latine body, and the intersections of heritage and resilience, solidifying her place as a thought-provoking voice in contemporary art.

My art practice addresses the gap in society’s idea of beauty: that ALL women are beautiful and powerful. Youth, skin tone, size, and shape are not the only determinants of beauty. Beauty is a constant throughout all our lives and even afterward, in death.

ARTIST STATEMENT

"Since I first began drawing, feminine imagery has been at the center of my consciousness. My early ideas of beauty, intimacy, vulnerability, sexuality, strength, and race were shaped and linked through Renaissance paintings, Pre-Columbian ceramics, and photography in fashion magazines. The allure and power of the women in those images reflected what I saw in all women. However, I did not see a representation of someone who looked like me in those images of power. This led me to create art that represents me and my culture: strong and inspiring feminine images relatable to the Latine aesthetic."
